The Best Free Dance Classes For Adults Online Whilst In Lockdown: Part 1

Anyone else loving doing class in their pajamas? The world has shifted overnight, and the dance industry world has adapted to mirror this, creating brand new shifts of its own. In light of the covid-19 crisis, dancers all over the world are becoming shining beacons of passion and resilience, with many classes being taught by teachers who are teaching for free. Given that all of us dancers are currently out of work, it really is the best way to keep the dance world going; but it also is the most beautiful gift. I’m so incredibly grateful for all the classes from these amazing teachers. Perhaps the most amazing thing is that we are able to do classes with teachers all over the world, irrespective of geographic location. Teachers whose classes I’ve wanted to take for years, I can now learn from. And I’m discovering lots of amazing new ones too!

Now there is a LOT of content out there. Maybe you’ve heard of some of it, or maybe not so much and you could do with being pointed in the right direction. So I’ve compiled a list of some of my favourites here. This is going to be a 3 parter, with part 1 focusing on companies/studios offering the best free dance classes for adults online so don’t forget to keep checking back!

1. Edgepac

Edgepac is an LA based studio, with an abundance of phenomenal teachers. They’re an absolute must, for anyone dancing or wanting to dance professionally.

I did Lisa Eaton’s Slow Heel Jams class the other day. It. Blew. My. Mind. It was this really gorgeous blend of contemporary but in heels, with a commercial vibe. I loved how slow and elongated the movement was. Lisa also had this fantastic section where you move almost mechanically like a Barbie doll and the piece was so story driven, it was all about quarantine.

Derek Mitchell (think Hamilton’s Original Resident Choreographer) also has a theatre dance tutorial on there. He’s one teacher who I’ve followed on YouTube for years but I’ve never been in America to take his class! So yeah, that was a pure joy.

These are just 2 of my favourites, but honestly there are so many teachers and styles on there. Thy are teaching live classes on Instagram every day in a whole range of different styles. All you have to do is follow them, and they will let you know on their feed what teachers are teaching and when. There is a whole wealth of amazingly teachers within Edgepac to learn from so I really recommend looking into this. And classes in America really have a different flavour to them, so if you want some amazing quality free dance classes for adults, they are definitely one to check out!

2. Magnetic Movement

This network is like an Aladdin’s cave when it comes to dance classes. Honestly it makes me feel like I’m back at dance college (totally my happy place,) except that now college is in my living room and I generally have a bagel in hand. Magnetic movement caters to dancers of all levels, up to and including advanced professional. There’s also a couple of company classes on there too, and just to be super helpful, the timetable is colour coded for the different styles.

My favourite class on there at the moment are the La Duca ones (musical theatre), particularly Matthew Banks theatre jazz. Also, the Tracing Movement company class (taught by Stuart Winter.) Classes start anywhere between 8 and 10 pm and keep going all day right through to somewhere between 6 and 9.30pm.
These guys are defintely front runners in terms of free dance classes for adults right now.

3. Live Stream Arts Fitness

These guys I discovered just a few days ago! And they are epic! They are running both a dance timetable and a separate fitness timetable, so if you’re missing your time in the gym the also offer everything from HIIT to barre, zumba to pilates. Like Magnetic Movement, they also do a full program every day with lots of different styles to choose from. As a nice bonus they cater to every age, dance classes ranging from kids to teens right through to adults so there is definitely something here for everyone. They even have family classes, so if you know anyone with little ones definitely put them onto this. They always release the timetable for the next day the night before, so make sure you got your post it notes reminding you to check this daily.

I took Paige Nicole Goulding’s commercial class on their timetable last week, and it was FIERCE. Truly amazing teacher! I also did Rolfe Klements lyrical class on there recently and it was gorgeous! So balletic and calm. These are just a couple to look out for. There are honestly so many wonderful ones, so just see what takes your fancy!

4. ESC Dance Management

Next up we have ESC Dance Management. There are 2 absolutely rocking classes that I’ve taken of theirs this past week (although they do have some more too.) Katie Priestly (who worked on Strictly,) does a ballroom and latin class every Monday. Each week will be a different style- so last week was Jive, this week Cha Cha Cha. This is an absolute gift of a class, as I haven’t come across that many in this style, so go grab it! She really approaches things technically, so this is a great one for already trained dancers who have learnt other styles but are new to ballroom and Latin, as just like every style there are specifics in terms of technique that need to be in place.

They also do a fantastic fast paced musical theatre class on a Saturday at 12pm. Don’t panic though, they drill it and break it down a lot, as the whole hour is spent on the routine. Last Saturday we danced to Six (oh yes, I was feeling all the sass!) and the teacher Adam Lyons is fantastic. He also does daily Hiit classes on there, if you’re wanting to feel the burn in lock down.

Class Is Online

Worried you’ve missed a live? A lot of teachers are now uploading classes to Class Is Online, including Madeleine Waters who is absolutely one of my favourite dancers to watch. She teaches contemporary and it’s always just gorgeous- so full of musicality and storytelling. Maddie is part of Lucas Mcfarlane’s dance company Untitled and she also teaches classes at Pineapple. Maria Yacoub (who also teaches at Pineapple) also has class on there. These are just a couple of the wonderful teachers; they have a whole host to choose from in a ton of different styles. The first month if you sign up is completely free, and then it’s just £5 a month after that. That is less than the cost of a single class, for a WHOLE month and you can do as many as you want, pretty cool right? To access these guys, simply go to classison.com

Let’s Get Training!

So there you have it! If you’re looking to build a timetable for yourself, fully structured to what you want to work on and prioritise, this should give you everything you need! Please note, all but the first are UK based, so don’t forget to convert the time zone if you’re tuning in from another country. And all of the above can be found on Instagram. I hope this has helped you in finding free dance classes for adults that are both exciting and amazing quality teaching. As always I’d love to hear from you so if you have any suggestions or questions, drop me a comment below 🙂

  • Mick

First and foremost I’m glad you ignored what others said about you not making it in dance due to your height, and that you had the courage to carry on with your dream.

I can see that your workload must be hectic with amount of disciplines that you are learning, which obviously you need to do to give you a better chance of finding work.

I do actually watch “strictly” but that is mainly the wifes choice, all the same I do enjoy watching and I particularly enjoy the Argentine Tango. Such a spectacular dance when you see 2 professionals doing it.

Thank you for sharing and good luck

      Hi Mick,

Yes it does get pretty hectic doing lots of different styles and making sure I am versatile, but I feel very lucky to do what I love so it’s a joy in that respect and am super grateful 🙂

That’s awesome that you watch strictly, me too! You’re so right, Argentine Tango is exquisite, one of my absolute favourites to watch too. It’s so intricate and I always marvel at the speed. So glad you enjoyed this post 🙂
